Akrotiri and Dhekelia — the two Sovereign Base Areas retained by Britain under the 1960 Cyprus independence agreement — have no civilian monetary authority of their own and use the euro in practice. These commemorative issues exist purely as collector pieces sanctioned under the territories' unusual constitutional status, which gives Britain administrative control without the island forming part of the UK itself. The common chameleon, Chamaeleo chamaeleon, has one of its last viable European populations on the Akrotiri peninsula.
