City of Truro was the first steam locomotive to be officially recorded exceeding 100 mph, achieving that speed on the Great Western Railway in May 1904 — making 2004 its centenary year. Whether it actually broke 100 mph remains disputed among railway historians; the timing was done by a journalist with a stopwatch, and GWR never formally claimed the record during Truro's working life.
Guernsey issued commemoratives of this type through the Pobjoy Mint, which handled the majority of the island's collector coinage during this period.
