Additional information

Tristan da Cunha issues coins primarily for the collector market — the island's roughly 250 residents have little use for a five-pound gold-plated piece. The territory's numismatic program is administered through the British government, with coins struck under Royal Mint licensing arrangements and sold almost entirely to overseas buyers. Mintages are typically kept low by design.

The Britannia reverse on this issue has appeared across dozens of commemorative programs since the early 1990s, making individual pieces difficult to distinguish outside their original packaging.
