The Battle of the Somme centenary issue was released on July 1, 2016 — exactly one hundred years after the opening day of an offensive that remains the bloodiest single day in British military history, with nearly 57,470 British casualties before nightfall. The coin belongs to a broader Royal Mint commemorative programme marking the four years of the First World War centenary, running from 2014 through 2018.
