Additional information

Nelson's 1805 death at Trafalgar came before he could learn the battle's outcome — he was shot by a French sniper aboard HMS Victory at the height of the engagement and died roughly three hours later, told only that the enemy was defeated. The bicentenary commemorative cycle that preceded this issue had already peaked with the 2005 anniversary, making Guernsey's 2008 return to the subject a secondary wave, timed loosely to ongoing Trafalgar Square redevelopment that included a restoration of Nelson's Column.

Guernsey's geographic proximity to the Normandy coast lends the island an obvious stake in Napoleonic naval history.
