Alderney sits closer to the Normandy coast than to England — close enough that German forces occupied it from 1940 until liberation in May 1945, making it the only part of the British Isles to suffer full Nazi occupation. The island's use of its Crown Dependency status to issue commemorative coinage has made it a prolific source of collector issues since the 1990s, most struck under license by the Royal Mint or private minting houses rather than for any genuine circulation purpose.
Silver-plated copper at this weight is the workhorse specification of the modern commemorative trade, issued in quantities driven by collector subscriptions rather than historical need.
