Guernsey's choice to issue a D-Day commemorative carries particular weight that most issuing authorities lack. The island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945 — one of only two British jurisdictions actually held under Nazi occupation — making its institutional memory of liberation genuinely distinct from mainland British commemoratives on the same subject.
The copper-nickel version sits alongside a silver proof in the same series, with the base metal issue intended for general circulation release rather than collector packaging.
