Guernsey has issued commemorative five-pound pieces with some regularity since the 1970s, contracting production to the Royal Mint and various private mints depending on the issue. This copper-nickel circulation-quality strike was produced for Elizabeth II's 70th birthday — a parallel series of silver and gold proofs was marketed separately to collectors, making the base-metal version the genuinely circulated artifact of the two.
