Part of the Royal Mint's licensing arrangement with Sanrio and its global character properties, this piece belongs to a broader wave of commemorative five-pound issues that accelerated sharply under the Royal Mint's commercial expansion during the 2010s. Little Miss Sunshine originates from Roger Hargreaves' Mr. Men series, first published in 1971 — a children's book franchise that has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced in 2015 and appears on all circulating and commemorative coinage from that year until her death in 2022.
