Reverse description A dynamic, stylised central design by Claire Aldridge depicting a competitive cyclist whose form merges artistically with a large numeral '1' rendered in a bold digital typeface, symbolising the one-year countdown to the 2012 London Olympic Games. The composition references the XXX Olympiad, with the London 2012 logo and associated inscriptions arranged around the design within the field. The overall aesthetic reflects the graphic visual language adopted across the London 2012 Olympic countdown coin series.

Additional information

Issued in 2011 as the first in a countdown series building toward London 2012, this piece was part of an unusually sustained marketing campaign by the Royal Mint spanning several years of preliminary releases. The London Games were the first Olympics held in Britain since 1948, when post-war austerity meant the organizing committee operated on a budget so tight that athletes were asked to bring their own food.

The countdown series generated strong initial sales but secondary market premiums collapsed quickly once the Games concluded.
