Alderney's commemorative program has long operated as a de facto revenue exercise for the Guernsey treasury, issuing legal tender coins with no realistic prospect of circulation. This 2021 piece marks two centuries since Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design entered production at the Royal Mint — a design famously retained on British sovereigns despite repeated official attempts to replace it in the 19th century, largely because Pistrucci himself refused to engrave another artist's portrait and the standoff was never cleanly resolved.
Struck in 22-carat gold at close to full sovereign weight, the issue mirrors the specification of a double sovereign.
