Guernsey's crown-sized commemorative program has leaned heavily on British royal themes since the 1970s, a predictable product of the island's position as a Crown Dependency. The 2001 "19th Century Monarchs" issue appeared during a busy period for the Royal Mint's contract striking operations, when a number of Channel Island authorities were placing similar commemorative orders.
