| Obverse description | At right-centre, an intaglio portrait vignette of Sir Alexander Fleming (1881–1955) is set against a deep blue underprint dominated by a large numeral '5', overlaid with a multicoloured guilloche pattern and the bank's interlocking CB monogram device at left-centre. The denomination 'Five Pounds Sterling' runs in bold letterpress across the upper register, with the promise-to-pay text and the manuscript signature of David Thorburn, Chief Operating Officer, dated Glasgow 6th August 2009, placed centrally below.
