Clydesdale Bank's transition from Glasgow-chartered independence to National Westminster Group ownership in 1920 — and later Midland Bank control from 1987 — never stripped it of Scottish note-issuing authority, and this series bridges an important internal moment: Macmillan's promotion from General Manager to Chief General Manager mid-run, creating a signature variant that most generalist catalogs overlook entirely. The unlisted 27.02.1981 Macmillan date compounds that gap.
Scottish chartered banks retained their right of issue under arrangements predating the Bank Charter Act of 1844, which explicitly exempted them. Clydesdale has issued continuously ever since.
