The Citadel of Aleppo, one of the oldest and largest medieval fortresses in the world, had been a continuous habitation site for at least four millennia before Syria began featuring it on coinage. This 1996 issue appeared during a period when the Assad government was systematically promoting pre-Islamic and Islamic heritage sites on circulating currency — a calculated cultural policy during a decade of relative internal stability before the country's later catastrophic upheaval.
