Churchill's connection to the Channel Islands is grimmer than most commemorative issuers choose to acknowledge. Guernsey was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945 — the only British territory to fall — and Churchill made the deliberate strategic decision not to defend or attempt to retake the islands, judging them militarily indefensible. That calculated abandonment left the civilian population under Nazi occupation for nearly five years.
Guernsey has issued Churchill gold before, so this 2024 entry continues an established pattern rather than marking any particular anniversary.
