The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921, partly at the urging of Field Marshal Haig, to support veterans returning from the Western Front. Its association with D-Day commemoration is longstanding — the Legion has organized Normandy pilgrimages since the 1940s, and its role in the 80th anniversary events of June 2024 prompted a wave of sanctioned issues from Crown dependencies, Jersey among them.
Jersey's authority to issue its own coinage derives from its status as a Crown dependency outside the United Kingdom proper, a quirk that has made it a prolific licensing partner for commemorative programs.
