The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921, partly through the efforts of Field Marshal Haig, whose reputation among veterans was — and remains — contested. Jersey's choice to issue under its own authority rather than through the Royal Mint reflects the island's status as a Crown dependency outside the United Kingdom proper, with its own distinct occupation history that makes D-Day commemoration something other than abstract patriotism here.
Piedfort specification doubles the standard flan thickness, a format revived for modern commemoratives by the French Monnaie de Paris in the 1970s before the Royal Mint adopted it.
