Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II, originally sculpted in 1964 and adopted for coinage in 1968, became the longest-running effigy in British monetary history — used unaltered on circulating coinage for over three decades. This commemorative pairs that portrait with Charles III's effigy, a combination impossible in circulation since Machin died in 1999 and Elizabeth II in 2022. The Royal Mint's decision to revisit the Machin portrait here is partly archival: the original plaster model is held in the Mint's own collection.
