Issued to mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, the May 1943 RAF raid in which 617 Squadron used Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb to breach the Möhne and Eder dams in the Ruhr valley. The operation destroyed two dams and damaged a third, though at severe cost — 53 of the 133 aircrew were killed, a loss rate that shocked even the mission's planners.
Guernsey has no direct connection to the raid, issuing this as a licensed commemorative through the Crown Dependency's mint program. The KM#516a designation distinguishes this silver proof from the base-metal circulation strike.
