Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the Arab League, which was founded in Cairo on 22 March 1945 with six member states — Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Lebanon. Egypt's role as host and principal architect of the League gives this issue a specific institutional logic beyond generic commemoration. The secretariat has been headquartered in Cairo for all but a brief period following Egypt's expulsion after the Camp David Accords in 1979; the League's headquarters relocated to Tunis until Egypt's readmission in 1989.
