Al Ahly SC, founded in Cairo in 1907, was celebrating its centenary when this issue was authorized — the club had by that point accumulated more African Champions League titles than any other side on the continent. Egypt's commemorative coinage program of the 2000s frequently reached into sports and cultural institutions, and the Central Bank issued several similar low-denomination silver pieces in this period that circulated little and were largely absorbed by club supporters and casual collectors rather than the numismatic trade.
