Obverse description Right-facing intaglio portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara occupies the right portion of the note, set against a finely engraved guilloche border. The denomination FIVE POUNDS is printed in large letterpress at centre, flanked by ornamental panels, with an oval guilloche vignette on the left side and a small landscape vignette of a building at lower centre. The text panel records the issuing authority, the date and place of issue, and the legal tender clause in accordance with the Coinage and Currency Act 1938.

Reverse description A large central vignette presents a panoramic view of Victoria Falls with a solitary figure in the foreground, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving in shades of blue and violet. To the left, a circular medallion contains a sable antelope within a wreath, serving as an underprint vignette, while the Southern Rhodesia national coat of arms is positioned centrally at the top between the country name inscription. An oval guilloche panel appears at right, and the denomination is repeated in all four corners as well as in a banner at the foot of the note.
