Obverse description Unilateral white note printed in black intaglio on plain white paper. In the upper left corner, a small vignette of Britannia seated on a throne beneath a crown, enclosed in an oval frame. The header reads 'Bank of England' in elaborate copperplate script, below which the promise text reads 'to pay the Bearer on Demand the Sum of Five Pounds', with the date and place of issue 'London' inscribed in manuscript style. A large ornate 'Five' panel in bold guilloche engraving occupies the lower left, while the right side carries the authorisation 'For the Gov. and Compa. of the Bank of England' above the Chief Cashier's signature.
