The Leyte Gulf Landing commemoration marks the October 1944 amphibious operation in which Allied forces under MacArthur returned to the Philippines after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942. The battle that followed — spanning air, surface, and submarine engagements across several days — remains the largest naval battle in recorded history by number of vessels involved.
