The "Bagong Bayani" — New Heroes — series was introduced by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to honor overseas Filipino workers, a demographic remitting roughly $20–25 billion annually into the Philippine economy by the early 2010s. The 5 Piso denomination in nickel brass replaced an earlier bimetallic version as part of a broader coinage reform aimed at reducing production costs while maintaining durability in tropical circulation conditions.
