Obverse description The obverse features a plain field enclosed by an inner pearl circle, within which the large numeral '5' appears prominently in the center. A circular legend reading 'NOTGELD ★ STADT TANGERMÜNDE ★ 1919' surrounds the inner pearl circle, itself bordered by an outer pearl rim running close to the coin's edge. The two five-pointed stars serve as separators within the legend. The overall design is typographic in character, with no pictorial motifs, reflecting the utilitarian nature of wartime Notgeld coinage.

Additional information

Tangermünde issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1919 as municipal credit collapsed in the immediate aftermath of defeat and abdication. Small-denomination emergency coinage of this type filled the gap left by hoarded copper and nickel, which had been systematically stripped from circulation — and in many cases melted — during the war years. The city, a modest Elbe trading town with a medieval fortification history far exceeding its postwar economic relevance, had no special minting infrastructure and contracted production through standard commercial channels.

The Funck 531.1 attribution places it among the better-documented Saxony-Anhalt municipal issues.
