A privately issued notgeld token from Josef Schrank's jewelry and watchmaking shop in Regen, a small town in the Bavarian Forest. These zinc pieces circulated locally during the post-WWI shortage of small-denomination coinage, when the German federal government's inability to produce sufficient Kleingeld pushed thousands of municipalities, businesses, and private firms to fill the gap themselves. Schrank's shop was hardly alone — by 1921, an estimated 100,000 distinct notgeld issues existed across Germany. The Menzel catalog cross-references this piece under two separate entries, suggesting some ambiguity in the recorded die or variant population.
