| Obverse description | A continuous incuse line forms the rim, enclosing the municipal coat of arms of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm centered in the field, depicted as a quartered shield surmounted by a mural crown and flanked by decorative scrollwork. The circular legend reads STADTGEMEINDE PFAFFENHOFEN A. ILM, separated by two six-pointed star ornaments positioned at the left and right of the legend. The heraldic design is rendered in moderate relief with fine linear detailing throughout the shield. |

Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm issued this notgeld piece in 1917, the same year German municipal authorities across Bavaria scrambled to fill a coinage vacuum created by wartime metal requisitioning. Zinc was the reluctant substitute — corrosion-prone, difficult to strike cleanly, and deeply unpopular with the public — but copper and nickel had been redirected to the war effort well before this piece was authorized.
The Funck reference places it among the better-documented Bavarian municipal issues of the period.
