Obverse description The obverse features the state emblem of the German Democratic Republic centrally positioned in the field: a hammer and compass superimposed on a wreath of grain, bound at the base with a ribbon. The emblem is rendered in crisp relief against a smooth field. The circular legend DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK runs along the periphery, separated by small five-pointed stars at the base flanking the word REPUBLIK.
