Anhaltische Kohlenwerke operated brown coal mines in the Geiseltal basin near Mücheln, one of the most productive lignite extraction regions in central Germany. During the First World War and its aftermath, chronic metal shortages and municipal currency chaos prompted hundreds of German industrial firms to issue their own Notgeld — emergency coinage redeemable only within company premises, typically at the mine canteen or company store. This piece is one such token, circulating among workers as a substitute for official small change that simply wasn't available.
Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort years earlier.
