Krupp's company store — the Konsum-Anstalt — issued scrip denominated in Pfennig during the First World War as small change became increasingly scarce throughout Germany. This was part of a broader wave of Notgeld that flooded the country from 1914 onward, driven by hoarding of metallic coin once war began. Krupp's operation in Essen was vast enough to sustain an internal currency; the workforce at the Gußstahlfabrik numbered in the tens of thousands by 1915, making a functioning canteen and company store economy entirely practical.

Paper at this denomination wore out fast in factory hands.
