Grube Ilse was a lignite mining operation in the Niederlausitz region, and like many large German industrial employers during the inflationary period, its welfare subsidiary — the Ilse-Wohlfahrts-Gesellschaft — issued its own small-denomination scrip to keep wages functional when Reichsbank notes were either unavailable in small cuts or depreciating faster than they could be distributed. Starke & Sachse of Grossenhain were a regional printer responsible for a significant volume of this kind of industrial Notgeld, and their output for colliery and factory issuers tends to be typographically plain and workmanlike rather than decorative.
