Obverse description The octagonal field displays the municipal coat of arms of Erstein at center, comprising a divided shield: the dexter half bears a diagonal band strewn with floral rosettes, while the sinister half depicts a frontal view of a church or chapel with twin domed towers and a central portal. The date 1917 appears in the upper field above the shield. The circular legend STADT ERSTEIN runs along the periphery, bordered by a continuous ring of raised pellets framing the entire design.

Reverse description The central field features a large numeral 5 denoting the denomination, enclosed within a rope or cable inner circle. Three five-pointed stars are evenly spaced below the inner circle along the lower arc of the design. The curved legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE (small change substitute token) arcs along the upper periphery, with the entire design bordered by a ring of raised pellets following the octagonal outline of the coin.
