Obverse description A pearl border frames the field, within which the municipal coat of arms of Elberfeld is prominently displayed at centre: a heraldic shield surmounted by a mural crown with three towers, bearing a rampant lion passant in the lower portion of the escutcheon. The city name inscription 'STADT' appears vertically to the left of the shield and 'ELBERFELD' vertically to the right, flanking the arms in the field.

Reverse description A pearl border encircles the entire reverse field. The circular legend 'KRIEGSGELD 1917' arcs across the upper portion, with the word 'PFENNIG' appearing in the lower arc, both separated by dot stops. The large numeral '5' occupies the centre of the field as the principal denomination device, boldly rendered in plain relief.
