| Additional information |
Kassel's municipal emergency coinage of 1917 came out of the same wartime metal shortage that stripped German kitchens of copper pots and pulled coins from circulation across the Reich. By mid-war, the imperial government had essentially given cities and towns permission to solve the small-change problem themselves, which is why zinc became the default material — it was still available when copper and nickel were not.
The Funck 78.2 designation distinguishes this from at least one other die variety in the Kassel series, worth confirming against the edge and relief details before cataloging.
