| Reverse description | The large numeral 5, denoting the denomination in Pfennig, is prominently centered within a rope or twisted-cord circle. Beilngries is a small market town in the Altmühl valley of Bavaria, and its 1917 zinc notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of emergency municipal coinage that flooded Germany when the imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production. Thousands of towns were left to fend for themselves, contracting local or regional mints to strike whatever base metal remained available. Zinc was the default — abundant, cheap, and utterly unpleasant to strike cleanly, which explains the frequently poor surface definition seen across this entire class of issue.
