Glogau notgeld from this period was issued by the city magistrate in direct response to the chronic small-coin shortage that plagued Germany through 1918–1920, when metal was hoarded and official coinage effectively vanished from everyday commerce. Carl Flemming A.G. was a Glogau-based firm with deep roots in map and atlas printing — an unusual background for an emergency currency printer, but one that gave their notgeld notably clean presswork relative to many municipal issues of the period.
The G20.4b suffix in the Grabowski-Mehl reference indicates a discrete variety within the broader G20 series, likely distinguished by a signature, date, or serial block difference from its close relatives.
