Additional information

The Quetzalcoatl bullion series was introduced by the Casa de Moneda in the mid-1990s as a direct competitor to established silver rounds like the American Silver Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf. Mexico had obvious grounds for entering that market — it has been the world's largest silver-producing nation for most of the past five centuries. The 1998 issue falls mid-series, after the initial launch enthusiasm but before the line was eventually discontinued in favor of the Libertad as the flagship bullion vehicle.

The 5 Peso face value is essentially nominal; it bore no relationship to silver spot or to the coin's actual purchasing power in 1998 pesos.
