Obverse description The Guatemalan national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a resplendent quetzal bird perched atop a scroll inscribed with the independence date LIBERTAD / 15 DE SETIEMBRE DE 1821, flanked by two crossed rifles and two crossed swords, all enclosed within a wreath of laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The fineness 0,900 appears in the lower left field, the word ESSAI (denoting trial or pattern status) in the lower center, and the date 1894 in the lower right field. The coin is bordered by a plain inner rim and a finely beaded outer border.
