Pattern coinage from the Casa de Moneda de México in the mid-1980s came directly out of a monetary crisis. Mexico's peso collapsed under catastrophic inflation — over 100% annually by 1986 — forcing the mint to explore new denominations and alloy compositions as the government scrambled to restructure circulating coinage. Brass was tested as a cost-effective alternative during this period of rapid demonetization.
The reeded edge on this pattern distinguishes it from the plain-edge variants also produced during trials. Most survivors went to institutional collections; street survival is essentially zero.
