Uruguay's monetary system underwent a significant redenomination in 1975, replacing the old peso at a rate of 1,000 to 1 with the nuevo peso. Pattern pieces struck in the years preceding that reform — including this 1969 issue — reflect the BCU's extended search for a viable coinage plan during a period of severe inflation that was already eroding the peso's purchasing power faster than new denominations could be introduced.
