The Banco Provincial de Córdoba was one of several Argentine provincial banks empowered to issue currency during the 1860s–70s, a period when Buenos Aires and the interior provinces were still contesting financial as well as political authority. Provincial emissions like this one frequently circulated at a discount outside their home province, and the Córdoba notes were no exception — accepted at par locally, deeply distrusted in Rosario or the capital.
The American Bank Note Company printed substantial quantities of Argentine provincial paper during this period, often from shared or adapted plate elements. PS729B2 designates a specific signature or overprint variety within the 1873 Córdoba 5 Pesos series, suggesting at least one earlier catalogued state exists for this denomination.
