Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion shows a golden key between two rocky promontories symbolizing Cuba's strategic position, the lower-left section bears blue-and-white horizontal stripes representing the original Cuban departments, and the lower-right section displays a royal palm against a rising sun. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a staff and flanked by sprays of oak on the left and laurel on the right. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper rim in raised Latin characters, while the denomination 5 PESOS appears in the lower field.
