Colombia's 1968 International Eucharistic Congress was hosted in Bogotá — the 39th such congress held worldwide and the first in South America since Buenos Aires in 1934. The Catholic Church's selection of Bogotá coincided with Pope Paul VI's visit to the city, the first papal visit to Latin America, making this one of the more politically significant religious gatherings in the region's modern history.
Paul VI used the occasion to address poverty and social inequality directly, a speech that fed directly into the broader Liberation Theology debates then fracturing the Latin American Church.
