Reverse description The aluminium bronze centre bears a three-quarter facing bust of independence hero Hermenegildo Galeana turned slightly to the left, rendered in bold relief with finely detailed facial features and period dress with a cravat. The denomination $5 appears to the left of the portrait and the mint mark Mo with the date 2008 to the right. The name HERMENEGILDO GALEANA is inscribed in an arc along the lower portion of the centre. The surrounding stainless steel ring carries the legend BICENTENARIO DE LA INDEPENDENCIA arcing across the upper field and MÉXICO 2010 along the lower arc, commemorating the bicentennial of Mexican independence.

Additional information

Hermenegildo Galeana was a mixed-race muleteer from the Costa Chica region who became one of José María Morelos's most effective field commanders during Mexico's war of independence. He died in 1814 at Palmillas when, according to accounts, he turned back to retrieve his fallen hat and was shot — a death so circumstantially undignified that it has attracted skepticism from historians ever since.
