| Obverse description | The aluminium bronze centre displays the Mexican national arms in high relief: an eagle perched on a prickly-pear cactus, facing left and devouring a serpent, with its wings spread in a heraldic posture. The cactus rises from a rocky islet surrounded by water, rendered in fine detail. The stainless steel ring bears the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS along the upper arc in raised Latin characters, with stylised laurel and oak branch ornaments decorating the lower arc. |

Filomeno Mata was a Mexican journalist imprisoned over thirty times by the Porfirio Díaz regime for his relentless criticism in the pages of El Diario del Hogar, the opposition newspaper he founded in 1881. His inclusion in the Personajes bimetallic series — launched by Banco de México to circulate historical figures through everyday commerce — was a deliberate editorial choice, elevating a dissident printer over the generals and politicians who typically dominate national coinage.
