| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a stylized segment of a football pitch rendered in fine parallel lines across the central field, evoking the texture of a grass playing surface. The legend REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by two five-pointed stars commemorating Argentina's FIFA World Cup victories of 1978 and 1986. The denomination 5 PESOS and the date 2018 appear in the exergue. |

Argentina's World Cup commemorative series has produced dozens of issues over the decades, but this one carried particular weight domestically — the 2018 tournament in Russia came during a period of severe economic turbulence in Argentina, with the peso losing roughly half its value against the dollar in the months surrounding the coin's release. The BCRA was simultaneously intervening aggressively in currency markets while striking .925 silver collector pieces denominated in a currency few trusted.
Argentina famously reached the Round of 16 before elimination by France, the eventual champions. The coin was minted regardless of that outcome, planned well in advance.
