The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires was not Argentina's central bank — it was a provincial institution with a turbulent monetary history, having suspended specie payments multiple times before this note was issued. The 1881 date places it squarely in the early post-Roca period, when Buenos Aires province was navigating the financial consequences of federalization: the city of Buenos Aires had just been ceded to the national government, stripping the province of its historic capital and forcing a hard institutional reset.

American Bank Note Company's New York work on Argentine provincial paper from this period is generally well-regarded for ink saturation and fine-line engraving. PS#538 is not among the common survivors of the series.
