Cuba's late-1980s commemorative program was prolific to the point of cynicism — the state mint churned out hard-currency collector pieces for export revenue while the domestic economy ran on near-worthless pesos convertibles. This coin was never intended for Cuban hands. It was struck for European and Latin American numismatic dealers, priced in dollars the average Cuban could not legally hold.
The 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy was the marketing hook; three separate footballer designs were issued simultaneously under the same KM series, distinguishable only by reverse composition.
